Rancho Palos Verdes, December 1, 2023-- With 300 guests attending the Nurses Pub’s “Working Today For 100K” scholarship gala on November 4, 2023, keynote speaker Stedman Graham demonstrated that he is no stranger to the podium. Encouraging leaders to “know who you are,” Graham energized a room of nurses, nursing students, business leaders and executives at the picturesque Terranea Resort in Rancho Palos Verdes.
Graham is a business advisor, chairman and CEO of S. Graham and Associates, a management and marketing consulting firm. He has written 12 books, including two New York Times bestsellers and one Wall Street Journal bestseller. As a businessman, educator and speaker, Graham lectures and conducts training programs on identity leadership for corporations and educational organizations. He has delivered identity leadership
programs in the Netherlands, Germany, China, Canada, the UK, Bermuda and South Africa.
Mona Clayton, founder of The Nurses Pub, states, “It was an honor to have Mr. Graham excite future nurses and current leaders on how to impact the future of nursing and become effective leaders. Nurses are known as the leaders of healthcare. What better person to speak on our behalf and to share key ingredients for making top-notch leaders.
Rudabeh Shahbazi, a three-time Emmy award winning journalist and anchor on KCAL mornings was a large reason for the evening’s success. By sharing her family's history with the medical profession she proved that she was the perfect host.
Mona Clayton, executive director and founder of the nonprofit Nurses Pub is on a mission to end the nursing shortage. Clayton saw the need to help minorities and single mothers to enter the nursing profession by offering them cultural capital and a roadmap for professional success. In her words, "The Nurses Pub is developed to support students to finish the journey.” The Nurses Pub is a community of future nurses where students can come to be nourished and supported.
The gala’s top sponsors were Terranea Resort, University of Phoenix and West Coast University. Its purpose was to fund scholarships for nursing students, construct a resource center, and train 100,000 future nurses.
The recipients of student scholarships were Brittney Thompson, Evans Manzanares and Monique Montalvo. Other honorees were Gloria Willingham-Touré (Trailblazer Award); Dr. Levi Harrison (Danny G. Bryant Humanitarian Award); and Joanelle Adjar (Education in Excellence Award).
Clayton adds, “Although the gala was successful; we just can’t make it a one-night affair. The Nurses Pub is in need of more partnerships and thought leaders to support our mission. Everyone will need an excellent nurse one day.”

Rancho Palos Verdes, December 1, 2021 -- The Nurses Pub Organization, hosted a fundraising extravaganza to build momentum for constructing a state-of-the-art, resource and education center for youth, young adults and single parents that are seeking a career in nursing. Over 200 guests from an array of professional backgrounds attended the event. Major contributors, Platinum Sponsor Terranea Resort along with University of Phoenix, Southern California, the Gold Presenting Sponsor helped to push the agenda. The goal is to enhance what the conventional nursing programs may not offer such as in house childcare assistance, tutoring, transportation, financial support and mentoring.
Mona Clayton, CEO of the non-profit, recognizes that the “art” of becoming a nurse is especially difficult for a single parent or young adult living in an underserved community, similar to the environment in which she was born.
Clayton, during a heartfelt moment of reflection, spoke of growing up and wishing one day to visit Palos Verdes and have lunch at Terranea. “Dreams will come true because I only wished growing up that one day I would be able to afford to have lunch at Terranea; but in the back of my mind I thought I never could.”
The evening featured riveting speeches from Superior Court Judge Kelvin Filer and Lori Robertson, NP, the Iconic Nurse Recipient. Saxophonist Vaughn Fahie mesmerized the audience with his performance. Comedian Donna Maine provided laughs recounting her work as a nurse in the field. The featured artist was singer-songwriter Jamall Anthony, known for his collaboration with American Idol winner Jordin Sparks. Lexus of SouthBay sponsored a chic red carpet pre-event featuring a selection of cars and guest interviews. Grand Canyon University, another event sponsor presented Dr. Wanda Morris of El Camino, the Trailblazer Award for her outstanding 40 years of service to the nursing community.
The charity event's highlight was the award of scholarships given to well-deserving nursing students and the student volunteers who were inspired by the experiences of veteran nurses.
According to student volunteer Latoya Butts, “I did not imagine myself being in such a powerful room full of so many greats at each of their own professions, I now also understand the magnitude of Ms. Clayton’s inspiration on so many others specifically on nursing students. The ones I met that evening of the Second Annual Nurse’s Pub will be a part of the next room of greats.”
Clayton said, “We are reaching out for financial support aroud the world to further our efforts to build and sustain a center where students can be nurtured and developed, as well as their children. Some say some things are impossible. I say anything impossible can be made possible with the support of others that believe.”

April 4, 2022-Los ANGELES - Californer -- In partnership with Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) and HEET Community of Schools (HEET CoS), the Nurses Pub is delivering cultural capital to students through The Nurses Pub Club After School Program. Students who are interested in becoming nurses, doctors, pharmacists, dentists, anesthesiologists, surgeons, therapists or any other type of medical professional will have first-hand opportunities to learn the logistics for becoming successful medical practitioners.
The Nurses Pub, a nonprofit organization that was founded in 2018, has the sole mission to guide students into nursing. CEO Mona Clayton, a registered nurse, saw the opportunity to expand programming to develop an all-inclusive platform for students who lack knowledge of what is needed to break into various medical professions. Clayton said, "When I attended high school, although I was a stellar science student, the counselor advised me to become a secretary." Clayton now considers her purpose to be guiding students like herself who grew up in the inner city environment to be a vehicle for change.
"Many students from the inner cities do not have the promise of the same cultural capital that those from other communities may have, and this program will be a change agent for promising medical professionals," according to Clayton.
The program will launch serving students from Crenshaw, Dorsey and Washington Preparatory Complex of Schools which offers a variety of incentives for students to obtain first-hand career literacy from a wide array of professional speakers and guidance counselors to teach students the ins and outs of entering medical school and other programs, tell them what human resource services offer, and provide information on how to be successful in interviews, as well as giving resume guidance, additional literature, and CPR certification provided by The American Red Cross and many other significant resources.
"I am thankful for the HEET Leadership team and the principals who saw the vision for the future of the students and for supporting this much needed program to help students thrive in the pursuit of cultural capital," says Clayton.
